Ketetahi Springs
Steam rises from the Ketetahi Springs, on the northern slope of Mt Tongariro. They take their name, which means ‘one basket’, from an episode involving the Te Arawa ancestor Ngātoroirangi. Atop the cold mountain, he summoned three baskets of fire. However, only one arrived, which he threw onto the side of Tongariro.
