Lake Rotorua health warning
Concern about flushing sewage into Lake Rotorua mounted in the 1960s, when the town grew rapidly. City sewage is now treated away from the lake, but runoff from farms and septic tanks continues to add soluble nutrients to the water. High nutrient levels can affect water quality and lead to growth of cyanobacteria (blue–green algae), which can cause skin irritations, upset stomachs and flu-like symptoms. Electronic signs such as this now alert the public to lake water conditions.
