Māori as a percentage of the population, 1926–1976

The population grew rapidly on the Volcanic Plateau in the 50 years from 1926 to 1976. Total numbers of Māori increased, but their proportion of the population fell, as Pākehā and people from the Pacific Islands made their homes in the region.
