Story: Volcanic Plateau places
Much of Lake Okataina’s shoreline was under the mana of Ngāti Tarāwhai. In the 19th century the tribe moved its main home to Ruatō, on Lake Rotoiti, and in 1921 they gifted the shores of Okataina to the Crown for a scenic reserve. This shelter commemorating the gift is at the northern end of the lake, the only part accessible by road.
