Story: Volcanic Plateau places
This painting by John Philemon Backhouse shows part of the western end of Lake Rotoiti around 1886, with Lake Rotorua in the distance. Backhouse served with the armed constabulary, and produced a number of oil paintings of the geothermal areas.
