Story: Volcanic Plateau places

Kuratau, 2007

Kuratau, 2007

The first Kuratau settlement was a sawmilling centre on the road to Taumarunui. Today the timber is long gone. Since the 1960s the name has referred to a lakeside settlement at the mouth of the Kuratau River. A shoreline reserve includes boat ramps, jetties and tennis courts. The view from this jetty looks south-east towards Tūrangi and Pīhanga, the round mountain in the middle distance.
