Waihī in the 1870s

This is Waihī, an important centre for the Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe, on the shores of Lake Taupō. Charles Barraud painted the watercolour on 6 February 1874, exactly 34 years after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Māori and the British Crown. However, there is no evidence that the painting was prompted by the anniversary.
