Hot springs at Tokaanu
The hot springs at Tokaanu, used by Māori for many years, were a popular stopping place on the tourist route that developed from the 1880s through the inland North Island. In this drawing by George Sturtevant, done around the 1890s, a bather is enjoying the pool. The distinctive shape of Maunganamu – which translates as ‘sandfly hill’ – can be seen in the distance.
