Story: Television

Close to home

TV One's Close to home was New Zealand's first enduring soap opera. It began screening in May 1975 and ran twice-weekly in the 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday slot until 1983. With Michael Noonan as the supervising writer and Tony Isaac the producer, the soap followed the fortunes of the extended Hearte family. This is an extract from the first episode, featuring Pop Hearte having a birthday. Close to home provided an excellent training ground for directors, actors and scriptwriters.
