Story: Class

South Auckland housing crisis

This clip from a 2008 television programme highlights the growing disparity in housing conditions in New Zealand at that time. The difficulties for renters were particularly severe in south Auckland, where a shortage of properties made over-crowding common and rentals high relative to the manual labouring wages earned by many people in that area. The quality of the houses in the area contrasted sharply with those found in more affluent areas of the city like Remuera or Herne Bay.
