Story: Factory industries

End of an era

Despite the best efforts of local people, the W. & R. Fletcher meatworks in Pātea closed down in 1982. The fall in population and income in the town that followed was made worse by the late 1980s recession and government restructuring, which reduced local provision of many public services.
