After the battle at Waerenga-a-hika, 1865

In 1865 emissaries of the Pai Māirire (Hauhau) faith came to Poverty Bay. They made many converts, but when they were challenged by government forces at Waerenga-a-hika , local Māori fought on both sides. This photograph shows the scene of destruction at the pā after the battle.
