Story: Trout and salmon
Brown trout are found in most waterways south of the Coromandel Peninsula. However, the fish were not deliberately released into all the waterways on this map. They have colonised some isolated river systems by going out to sea and then swimming up these rivers. Water temperatures north of the Coromandel Peninsula are too warm for spawning brown trout, although populations do occur in some Northland waterways. These are maintained by releasing hatchery-reared trout.
