The anchor of the Tainui canoe

The anchor of the Tainui canoe

Tribes from the Waikato and Hauraki districts trace their ancestry to the voyagers of the Tainui canoe. After leaving its crew at various places on both coasts of the North Island, the canoe finally ended its journey at Kāwhia on the west coast, where it was buried. However the anchor stone of the canoe was left further south, at Mōkau.
