Story: Treaty of Waitangi settlement process

Royal apology to Tainui, 1995

During a 1995 visit to New Zealand by Queen Elizabeth II she personally delivered an apology from the British Crown to the Tainui people. The apology formed part of the Waikato–Tainui treaty settlement, which also included land and financial compensation totalling $170 million. This television clip shows the queen signing the written apology with Prime Minister Jim Bolger, while elders of Tainui sing a traditional waiata.
