Snowy Creek

Snowy Creek, on the Rees–Dart track near Glenorchy in Otago, floods quickly with heavy rain. It has killed trampers who have tried to cross when it is running high. Because it drains glaciers, it can also flood on hot summer days when ice and snow melt. The most common cause of death for trampers is drowning while trying to cross a river. Trampers should never attempt to cross a flooded river or creek. Levels can fall again just as quickly, so it is best to wait for the level to fall before trying to cross.
