Tongans in New Zealand, 1961–2001
This graph shows the increase in New Zealand’s Tongan-born population as immigrants entered in the 1970s and 1980s. By contrast, in the 1990s the community’s major growth was through the New Zealand-born children of those earlier arrivals. In 2001 the New Zealand-born formed the majority of the Tongan community. Figures for ethnicity are only available from 1991.
