Tokelauans leaving for New Zealand, 1966 (1st of 3)
This group of Tokelauans came to New Zealand through the government’s Tokelau Islands Resettlement Scheme, originally formulated because of concerns that the atolls were overcrowded. In 1971, five years after the scheme’s inception, only 356 people had been resettled. Most Tokelauans arrived in New Zealand unassisted.
