Story: Threatened species
The fungus Russula inquinata is known from isolated places in Fiordland, Banks Peninsula, Springs Junction, Murchison, Karamea, Mt Arthur and Nelson. It grows alone or in pairs under southern beech or kānuka trees. The Department of Conservation has classified it as ‘nationally critical’, but as with many species, so little is known about its distribution that it also has a ‘data deficient’ status.
