Story: Threatened species
Canterbury mudfish occur in lowlands from about Oxford south to the Waitaki River. They were once widespread on the Canterbury Plains, in wetlands now mostly drained. They are reduced to small populations in fragile wetland remnants such as this one at Hororātā. In 2005 the Department of Conservation ranked the mudfish as ‘nationally endangered’. The biggest threat is damage to their habitat, mainly through drainage on private land.
