Cars and spas
The arrival of the motorcar, and its increasing popularity from the 1920s, allowed New Zealand families to take day trips and holidays. Remote hot springs became accessible, and many thermal resorts built swimming pools to attract visitors who wanted to relax and have fun. The changing perception of thermal pools is foreshadowed in this cropped photograph – a weekend motor trip to Hanmer Springs from Christchurch organised as a promotion by the Tourist Department.
