Story: Thermal pools and spas

Wairākei’s health benefits

Medical practitioners often recommended a spa holiday for those who were stressed or run-down. The combination of healing waters, good food, invigorating climate and rest was seen as rejuvenating. In this 1890s testimonial, Dr F. H. L. Allen cites Wairākei as a holiday destination for ‘the invalid or tired businessman’.
