Shipboard regulations and diet

This advertisement for an immigrant ship sailing from Glasgow to New Zealand includes, besides information about fares and luggage allowances, a ‘scale of dietary for each adult steerage passenger per week’. Steerage passengers endured a monotonous diet based on preserved meat, oatmeal and ship’s biscuit. Cabin passengers ate better – their menu included fresh meat and milk from live animals carried on board.
