New Zealand-born compared to foreign-born population, 1861–1901
One reason for the stronger sense of New Zealand identity at the beginning of the 20th century was the increasing number of people born in the country. In 1886 the census showed a greater number (excluding Māori) of New Zealand-born than foreign-born, and by 1901 this group formed a substantial majority.
