New Zealanders of overseas birth, 1961–2001
This graph demonstrates the dramatic rise, from the 1960s, in the number of immigrants to New Zealand who were not of British origin. Pacific Islanders were the first significant group to arrive. From the mid-1980s Asians, and some immigrants from Africa and the Middle East, came to live in New Zealand. The new arrivals posed a further challenge to long-held perceptions of the New Zealander, whether British or Māori.
