Waiting for the Queen

In the summer of 1953–54 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited New Zealand. Coverage of their tour presented New Zealand to its people and the world as a pioneering country, with a generous welfare state and ideal conditions for raising children. Here some future citizens with their Union Jacks and royal tour medals wait on their apple box for the royal couple to pass by.
