Story: The New Zealand bush
This tinted lithograph by George French Angas was not published until 1847, but was based on his travels in the North Island in 1844. It shows several Māori on a path through the bush. Although they were originally a coastal Pacific people, the image suggests that they were at home in the New Zealand bush by the time Europeans arrived. They travelled through the forest and used it as a source of foods and medicines.
