Story: The New Zealand bush

Bush travellers, Queensland (1st of 2)

Bush travellers, Queensland

This work by Richard Daintree (dated between 1864 and 1870) is a photograph overpainted in oils. Much of the Australian countryside was scattered gum trees such as this. ‘The bush’ was not forest, but park-like woodland where people could picnic in the sun. Before long, in Australia the word became a synonym for ‘the backblocks’.
