Story: Teenagers and youth
Youthline, which was founded in 1970, offers a free, non-judgemental telephone service for young people wanting to talk, along with other counselling and education services. Many of its volunteer staff are young people. The phone number, free text number, email address and websites all provide ports of call for young people who need to talk. In 2009 Youthline received over 100,000 calls and 200,000 texts. The main reasons people call are to talk about family or children (21%), personal issues or self esteem (12%), depression (9%), anger (8%), relationships (8%), sexual abuse or rape (7%), suicide (6%), grief (5%) and family violence (3%).
