Kaikōura Whale Watch

These tourists are on board the Kaikōura Whale Watch boat, Te Ao Mārama, as it follows a whale off the Kaikōura coast. The company is owned by the indigenous Ngāti Kurī people, who are part of the Ngāi Tahu tribe of the South Island. Ngāti Kurī claim descent from Paikea who, in tradition, was saved from the sea by the great whale Tohorā and brought to New Zealand.
