Story: Te whānau puha – whales
This well-known song was composed by Tommy Taurima to commemorate Ruawharo, the tohunga (priest) of the Tākitimu canoe. Ruawharo was responsible for possessing the mauri or life force of whales, which he laid down at Māhia Peninsula to attract whales. This waiata (song) is performed by students from Te Manga Māori, at the Eastern Institute of Technology.
