To partially compensate for past injustices, the government gave a grant to Te Whakatōhea in 1952. This helped to set up the Te Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board. The board now administers considerable assets, used to help Te Whakatōhea people in many ways including skills training, education grants and various business initiatives.
