Tāmati Pirimona Marino

Gottfried Lindauer painted this portrait of the Nelson chief Tāmati Pirimona Marino (affiliated to Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Rārua and Te Āti Awa), who owned the trading ship Erena. After the arrival of Pākehā the fortunes of Māori changed; many took advantage of the new economic practices despite occasional conflicts over land boundaries.
