Guide Sophia, also known as Te Paea, stands by Te Tarata (the White Terraces) in 1885, about 18 months before they were obliterated in the eruption of Mt Tarawera. Sophia was the principal guide of the Pink and White Terraces (Ōtūkapuarangi and Te Tarata). She was from Ngāti Ruanui on her mother’s side; her father was Scottish.
