Story: Te tango whenua – Māori land alienation

‘Locked-up native and Crown lands’

This map appeared in the New Zealand Herald newspaper in November 1905, showing Crown and Māori land in the North Island. The advertisement claims that 7,491,463 acres (more than 3 million hectares) of Māori land was ‘locked up’ – and that it could be used for 17,000 new farms and homesteads for Pākehā settlers, ‘the happy homes of an industrious and prosperous rural population’.
