Story: Te tango whenua – Māori land alienation
Maungapōhatu, in the Urewera, is the sacred mountain of Ngāi Tūhoe. By about 1900, the Native Land Court had completed its investigations of large areas throughout New Zealand. The only major area not yet investigated was the Urewera.
