Story: Te tango whenua – Māori land alienation
The politician William Hughes Field wrote this letter about difficulties caused by the requirement to only have 10 owners on a certificate of title. He notes how this was unfair to the 11th owner. The ’10 owners rule’ came in under the Native Lands Act 1865 and was abolished in 1873.
