Rangatira (chief) Nōpera Pana-kareao (far right) is seen here with Pākehā missionaries William Puckey and Joseph Matthews. Pana-kareao entered into a transaction with the Church Missionary Society for 1,000 acres to be set aside at Kaitāia for the mission. Many pre-Treaty of Waitangi transactions were between Māori and missionaries.
