Story: Te tango whenua – Māori land alienation
The Waitangi Tribunal was set up in 1975 to consider breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi. In 1985 its jurisdiction was made retrospective to 1840. Cliff Whiting’s design on the front of this 2005 report from the tribunal is described as ‘invoking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the consequent development of Maori-Pakeha history interwoven in Aotearoa, in a pattern not yet completely known, still unfolding’.
