Story: Te hī ika – Māori fishing
In this 1992 cartoon Douglas Graham, minister in charge of Treaty of Waitangi negotiations, talks to Sir Tīpene O’Regan and Matiu Rata, two key negotiators of Māori commercial fisheries claims. A settlement of $150 million was paid to the Māori Fisheries Commission, but here the reference is to the lawyers’ fees. This has proved almost prophetic given the significant cost of court battles following the settlement.
