Story: Te hī ika – Māori fishing
Two rows of poles marking fishing territory are visible in this 1877 illustration of Lake Horowhenua by Charles Barraud. Often the fishing rights in lakes, estuaries and other shallow waters were marked by rows of stakes driven into the water.
