Story: Te Āti Awa of Wellington
This plan shows the layout of Ōtaka pā, Taranaki (now within the boundaries of New Plymouth). The Te Āti Awa defence of this pā in 1832 against Ngāti Maniapoto and Waikato invaders was a notable victory, but Te Āti Awa knew the attackers would return for revenge. As a consequence, more Te Āti Awa people migrated to join relatives in the Wellington region.
