Lakes Tikitapu, Tarawera and Rotomahana

Lakes Tikitapu (foreground), Tarawera (left background), and Rotomahana (centre background) are all visible in this eastward-looking view. The flat-topped Mt Tarawera (left background) can also be seen. By the 1880s the Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana had become a popular destination for visiting European tourists. From Ōhinemutu tourists would take a coach through the village of Te Wairoa on the shores of Lake Tarawera. They were ferried across the lake, and then it was a short walk through to Lake Rotomahana. Tourism brought welcome revenue for guides, boatmen and hoteliers at Lake Tarawera.
