Story: Te Arawa
Margaret Thom, who had a Māori mother and an English father, was a guide for tourists visiting Whakarewarewa in the 1890s. All the tourists asked her why she had an English name. One day she was at a hot pool known as Papakura, and when asked her name yet again, she replied ‘Maggie Papakura’. She was known by this name from that time onwards. This photograph of 1910 shows the interior of her carved house, Tuhoromataka, at Whakarewarewa.
