Former prisoners return to Parihaka

Former prisoners return to Parihaka

In 1881 government forces entered the village of Parihaka, centre of a peaceful Māori resistance movement, arrested many of the inhabitants, and drove the others away. Parihaka was rebuilt, and those who had been arrested and imprisoned later returned. This photograph of 1898 shows a pōwhiri (welcome) for some of these men.
