Story: Taranaki region

Pohokura gas field

Pohokura gas field

In 2000 Fletcher Challenge Energy drilled two appraisal wells in the Pohokura gas field with this jack-up rig, 5 kilometres offshore from Waitara. The field was sold to Shell Todd Oil Services in 2001. Archaeological investigations and site preparation were carried out at the production station site at Motunui, and construction of the plant began in 2005. Development of the Pohokura field involved drilling three wells from a land-based site at Motunui, and six from a platform just off the coast. Visible in the left distance is Methanex’s methanol plant at Motunui.
