Ngāwhā springs
This pool at Ngāwhā springs (photographed in 1913) was one of the places where the taniwha Takauere was said to appear in the form of a log. When a prison was to be built at Ngāwhā the local people lodged an an objection. Among other things, they feared it would disturb the traditional area of Takauere.
