Story: Taniwha

Protecting Karutahi’s lair

This news report features an issue about a taniwha named Karutahi that gained national attention. A hapū (sub-tribe) in Waikato, Ngāti Naho, was concerned that a highway improvement would destroy the lair of this taniwha. Transit New Zealand agreed to reroute the highway to allay their concerns. Rima Herbert, of Ngāti Naho, outlines his pleasure at this ‘win–win’ solution.
