Settlement at Ōrākei, 1907

This photograph shows Ngāti Whātua houses and the meeting house at Ōrākei at the time when a new drainage line was being built in front of the settlement. The tribe raised objections, one of a long series of efforts to maintain a place in the area. This culminated in the occupation of Bastion Point in 1977–78 and the eventual recognition of Ngāti Whātua’s rights in the area. Financial compensation was given after a Waitangi Tribunal report.
