Ancestors of Te Kawerau-a-Maki (1st of 3)

Kōwhaikiteuru is an important Te Kawerau-a-Maki ancestor. This carving of him at Karekare is by Sunna Thompson, a Te Kawerau-a-Maki artist. Kōwhaikiteuru built the Te Kaka Whakaara (the watchman) at Karekare. Te Kawerau-a-Maki once held land from the Waitākere Ranges north to Leigh.
